In March Hubby and I had a day out at our nearest English Heritage site - Kenilworth Castle. We used to visit Kenilworth quite often, especially The Queen and Castle pub opposite the castle for special family birthdays when our children were young but haven't been for many years.
We've enjoyed English Heritage membership for a year now and have visited quite a few places whilst on holiday and as the weather forecast was sunny we thought we should visit our nearest property.
As members we had a free audio guide, a handy device on a lanyard that when held near an information board would bleep and open up the audio information for where you stood. I think I will start keeping a spare set of headphones in my handbag as this would have been easier than holding the device to my ear all the time.
Kenilworth Castle is full of history with many owners and changes to its buildings. It was built in the early 1100s and has been a royal castle for most of its life.
It has been owned by King John, John of Gaunt and Henry V, as well as Robert Dudley who was Elizabeth I's favourite. Since the mid 1600s it has no longer been a fortified castle and many of the buildings are unaltered since medieval times and Queen Elizabeth I's visit.
There is so much history and although I remember some details it's probably best if you look at the English Heritage site for Kenilworth Castle.
The photos don't really show the size or the extensive ruins you can climb to the top of for the spectacular views so if you are in Warwickshire anytime I would certainly recommend a visit.
It was lovely to see the Warwickshire bear and rugged staff standing over the gardens. We had a lovely visit around the castle including a delicious coffee and cake sitting outside in the sun by the tea room.
